Venezuela Overview

Venezuela boasts an astonishingly high bird list (over 1,400 species) packed into a highly diverse geography. From the towering tabletop mountains (tepuis) of the Guiana Shield to the vast flooded savannas of the Llanos, it is a mega-diverse Neotropical powerhouse.

Key Habitats & Highlights

• The Llanos (Hato El Cedral / Piñero): Vast, seasonally flooded savannas offering some of the easiest and most spectacular birding in South America, packed with Scarlet Ibis, Jabirus, Hoatzins, and massive Capybara herds.
• Henri Pittier National Park: The oldest national park in the country, featuring a famous mountain pass (Portachuelo) that funnels incredible numbers of migrating raptors and supports the spectacular Handsome Fruiteater.
• The Tepuis (Gran Sabana): Ancient, isolated flat-topped mountains that act as "islands in the sky," harboring highly localized endemics like the Tepui Goldenthroat and Rose-collared Piha.
• Andean Cloud Forests (Mérida): Steep, misty forests essential for finding the spectacular Sword-billed Hummingbird, Andean Cock-of-the-rock, and numerous endemic antpittas.

Seasonal Guidance

• Dry Season (Best) (December to April): The optimal time to visit, especially for the Llanos. As the floodwaters recede, staggering numbers of wading birds, caimans, and anacondas concentrate around the remaining shrinking pools.
• Wet Season (May to November): The Llanos completely flood, dispersing wildlife across an immense, inaccessible area. While the Andean and coastal forests see increased breeding activity, travel is generally much more difficult.
