Key Habitats & Highlights

• Sinharaja Forest Reserve: The crown jewel of Sri Lankan birding. This primary rainforest is essential for finding the Sri Lanka Blue Magpie, Red-faced Malkoha, and mixed feeding flocks led by the Orange-billed Babbler.
• Horton Plains: High-altitude cloud forest and moorland where you can find the Sri Lanka Whistling-Thrush (Arrenga), Dull-blue Flycatcher, and Yellow-eared Bulbul.
• Yala & Bundala National Parks: Arid coastal scrub and wetlands offering exceptional views of Malabar Pied Hornbills, Blue-tailed Bee-eaters, and a high chance of spotting Leopards.

Seasonal Guidance

• Dry Season (December to April): The optimal birding window. The weather is dry across the primary birding circuits (South and West), making forest trails in Sinharaja highly accessible and concentrating wildlife around waterholes in Yala.
• Inter-monsoon (May to July): Offers a secondary window of decent weather between the major monsoons, though humidity is higher and some forest trails can be muddy. The island offers excellent year-round birding if you navigate the regional rain patterns.
