Southeast Arizona Overview

Southeast Arizona is arguably the most famous birding region in the United States. Its unique "Sky Island" mountain ranges rise dramatically from the Sonoran and Chihuahuan deserts, creating isolated forested habitats that harbor Mexican species found nowhere else in the US.

Key Habitats & Highlights

  • Madera Canyon: A legendary hotspot for the Elegant Trogon, Elf Owl, and numerous hummingbird species.
  • Cave Creek Canyon (Chiricahua Mountains): The premier location to find the elusive Montezuma Quail and the stunning Mexican Chickadee.
  • Patagonia-Sonoita Creek: Essential riparian habitat famous for the Violet-crowned Hummingbird and Gray Hawk.
  • Ramsey Canyon Preserve: Often called the "Hummingbird Capital of the United States," hosting up to 14 species of hummingbirds.

Seasonal Guidance

  • Breeding & Monsoon Season (May to August): Considered the absolute peak for Southeast Arizona. The late summer rains trigger a "second spring," bringing out a dazzling array of hummingbirds and breeding flycatchers.
  • Spring Migration (March to May): Excellent for early northbound migrants moving through the riparian corridors and canyons.
