Romania Overview

Romania is dominated by two massive, world-class geographical features for birders: the towering Carpathian Mountains and the vast, labyrinthine Danube Delta. It offers some of the most untamed and spectacular wilderness birding remaining in Europe.

Key Habitats & Highlights

• The Danube Delta: Europe's largest remaining wetland. Explored by small boats, it is the ultimate stronghold for the Pygmy Cormorant, Great White Pelican, Red-footed Falcon, and White-tailed Eagle.
• The Carpathian Mountains: Vast, ancient forests holding huge populations of Brown Bears and Wolves. For birders, it is essential for the Ural Owl, Three-toed Woodpecker, and Wallcreeper in the high gorges.
• Dobrogea Steppes: Arid, rocky plains near the Black Sea offering the Pied Wheatear, Saker Falcon, and massive flocks of migrating storks.

Seasonal Guidance

• Spring & Early Summer (April to June): The absolute peak time for a visit. The Danube Delta is alive with breeding colonies of pelicans and herons, the Carpathian forests echo with woodpecker drumming, and the Black Sea coast acts as a massive migration funnel.
• Winter Wildfowl (November to February): Intensely cold and often freezing over, but the Black Sea coast hosts spectacular numbers of wintering Red-breasted Geese (one of the world's most beautiful and endangered waterfowl) and massive flocks of White-fronted Geese.
