Papua New Guinea (PNG) is the wild, untamed frontier of global birding. It is the epicenter of the Birds-of-Paradise, boasting some of the most spectacular, bizarre, and visually stunning birds on Earth in deep, largely untouched primary rainforests.

Key Habitats & Highlights

• Varirata National Park: Close to Port Moresby, this is the classic site for seeing the Raggiana Bird-of-Paradise displaying, as well as the Brown-headed Paradise-Kingfisher.
• Tari Gap (Southern Highlands): High-elevation mossy forest that is the stronghold for the spectacular Ribbon-tailed Astrapia, King of Saxony Bird-of-Paradise, and Blue Bird-of-Paradise.
• Kumul Lodge / Mount Hagen: Famous for its fruit feeders that attract the Brown Sicklebill and Brehm's Tiger-Parrot right to the balcony.
• Kiunga & Fly River: Lowland swamp forest essential for the iconic Twelve-wired Bird-of-Paradise and the massive Southern Crowned-Pigeon.

Seasonal Guidance

• Dry Season (May to October): The only realistic time to plan a major birding expedition. Rainfall is lower, making remote airstrips and muddy trails accessible. June through September aligns perfectly with peak displaying activity for most Birds-of-Paradise.
• Wet Season (November to April): Extreme rainfall makes travel in the highlands treacherous or impossible. Flights are frequently canceled, and bird activity is suppressed by heavy downpours.
