Norway offers the ultimate High Arctic birding experience in Europe. From the deep, forested fjords of the south to the desolate, tundra-covered Varanger Peninsula in the far north, it is the premier destination for breeding alcids, sea ducks, and boreal owls.

Key Habitats & Highlights

• Varanger Peninsula: The legendary Arctic hotspot. In summer, the tundra is alive with breeding Long-tailed Skuas, Dotterels, and Ruff. The fjords hold spectacular Steller's and King Eiders.
• Hornøya Island: A massive seabird colony where you can stand mere feet from tens of thousands of nesting Atlantic Puffins, Brünnich's Guillemots, and Razorbills.
• Pasvik Valley: Ancient taiga forest bordering Russia, essential for finding the Siberian Jay, Pine Grosbeak, and Hawk Owl.

Seasonal Guidance

• Arctic Summer (Best) (May to August): The most spectacular and accessible time to visit. The midnight sun allows for 24-hour birding, the sea cliffs are packed with breeding colonies, and the tundra is alive with displaying shorebirds.
• Winter Owls & Finches (November to February): Bitterly cold with near-total darkness in the far north. However, it is the season to find spectacular wintering flocks of King Eiders on the icy fjords and irruptions of Hawk Owls and Great Grey Owls in the boreal forests.
