Michigan Overview

Michigan is defined by the massive Great Lakes that surround it, creating unique microclimates and spectacular geographic funnels for migrating birds. It is globally famous among birders as the exclusive breeding ground for the highly endangered Kirtland's Warbler.

Key Habitats & Highlights

• Grayling & The Jack Pine Plains: The only place in the world to reliably find the breeding Kirtland's Warbler. These birds require highly specific, young Jack Pine forests maintained by controlled burns.
• Whitefish Point Bird Observatory: A legendary migration bottleneck jutting into Lake Superior. It is exceptional for spring raptor flights, migrating waterbirds, and rare owls (Boreal and Great Gray).
• Tawas Point State Park: A small peninsula on Lake Huron that acts as a premier "migrant trap" during spring fallouts, rivaling Magee Marsh in intensity.
• Seney National Wildlife Refuge: Vast Upper Peninsula wetlands excellent for the Yellow Rail, LeConte's Sparrow, and breeding Trumpeter Swans.

Seasonal Guidance

• Spring Migration & Breeding (May to June): The absolute peak window. Late May into June is the only time the Kirtland's Warblers are singing on their breeding grounds. May also delivers spectacular warbler fallouts at Tawas Point and heavy migration at Whitefish Point.
• Fall Migration (August to October): A superb time for observing the massive southbound movement of raptors, jaegers, and waterfowl along the shores of the Great Lakes.
