Malawi Overview

Malawi is a small, friendly, and deeply scenic country dominated by the massive Lake Malawi and the dramatic rift valley. It bridges the birding gaps between East and Southern Africa, offering comfortable lodges and several highly sought-after localized endemics.

Key Habitats & Highlights

• Nyika Plateau: A breathtaking, rolling high-altitude grassland offering the endemic Yellow-browed Seedeater, Denham's Bustard, and incredible concentrations of Roan Antelope.
• Liwonde National Park: A riverine wonderland along the Shire River. It is arguably the best place in Africa to see the Pel's Fishing-Owl, Lilian's Lovebird, and Brown-breasted Barbet.
• Dzalanyama Forest Reserve: Exceptional miombo woodland habitat essential for finding the Boulder Chat, Stierling's Woodpecker, and Anchieta's Sunbird.
• Mount Mulanje: A dramatic granite massif hosting the endangered Thyolo Alethe and Yellow-throated Apalis.

Seasonal Guidance

• Dry Season (Best) (May to October): The most pleasant and productive time to visit. The weather is cool and clear (especially on the Nyika Plateau), roads are in good condition, and wildlife is heavily concentrated along the Shire River in Liwonde.
• Wet Season (November to April): Hot, humid, and rainy. While it brings migrant birds and lush green landscapes, the rains make access to key mountain sites like Nyika difficult, and miombo birding can be frustratingly quiet.
