Karnataka (Western Ghats) Overview

The Western Ghats of Karnataka are a globally recognized biodiversity hotspot. These ancient, mist-shrouded mountains run parallel to the western coast of India, harboring lush evergreen forests, spectacular waterfalls, and the highest concentration of endemic birds in peninsular India.

Key Habitats & Highlights

• Nagarhole & Bandipur National Parks: Spectacular dry deciduous forests and teak woodlands. Essential for the Malabar Pied Hornbill, Indian Pitta, and incredible megafauna including Tigers and wild Asian Elephants.
• Dandeli & Ganeshgudi: A lush, riverine forest region that is arguably the best place in India to observe the spectacular Malabar Trogon, Sri Lanka Frogmouth, and massive Great Hornbills.
• Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary: Dense, wet evergreen forests offering the endemic Malabar Whistling-Thrush, Flame-throated Bulbul, and the elusive Rufous Babbler.
• Shola Grasslands (High Elevations): Unique stunted montane forests and rolling grasslands where you can find the highly restricted White-bellied Blue Robin and Nilgiri Pipit.

Seasonal Guidance

• Winter & Post-Monsoon (October to March): The absolute optimal time to visit. The forests are lush from the recent rains but the trails are dry. Wintering migrants from the Himalayas and Central Asia are present, and the leeches are mostly gone.
• Monsoon Season (June to September): Brings torrential, relentless rainfall to the Ghats. While the waterfalls are spectacular, birding is extremely difficult due to the constant downpours, flooded trails, and massive leech populations.
