Key Habitats & Highlights

• Látrabjarg Cliffs (Westfjords): One of Europe's largest bird cliffs, offering mind-bogglingly close views of millions of nesting Atlantic Puffins, Razorbills, and Northern Gannets.
• Lake Mývatn: A globally renowned waterfowl breeding site. You can find virtually every European duck species here, including the spectacular Harlequin Duck and Barrow's Goldeneye on the fast-flowing River Laxá.
• Snaefellsnes Peninsula: Excellent for coastal birding, White-tailed Eagles, and scanning the sea cliffs for the ultimate Icelandic prize: the Gyrfalcon.

Seasonal Guidance

• Arctic Summer (May to August): The absolute best time to visit. The midnight sun provides 24 hours of daylight for birding, and the sea cliffs are packed with millions of breeding seabirds. Puffins are most active in June and July.
• Winter Irruptions (November to March): Bitterly cold with very short daylight hours. However, it is the only time to see massive wintering flocks of Iceland Gulls, Glaucous Gulls, and Ptarmigan in their pure white winter plumage.
