Florida Everglades Overview

The Florida Everglades is a vast, slow-moving "River of Grass" representing the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States. It is a critical sanctuary for wading birds and species uniquely adapted to sawgrass marshes, cypress swamps, and mangrove estuaries.

Key Habitats & Highlights

• Anhinga Trail & Shark Valley: Offers famously close views of Purple Gallinules, Anhingas, and Wood Storks, along with basking alligators.
• Cypress Domes: Look for Barred Owls, Red-shouldered Hawks, and the elusive Limpkin probing for apple snails.
• Mangrove Coast (Flamingo): Excellent for Roseate Spoonbills, Reddish Egrets, and wintering shorebirds.
• Pine Rocklands: The only place in the US to reliably find the pinewoods-adapted White-crowned Pigeon and the resident Pine Warbler.

Seasonal Guidance

• Dry Season (November to April): The absolute best time to visit. As water levels drop across the glades, fish are concentrated in deeper sloughs, drawing spectacular flocks of feeding wading birds. Mosquitoes are also minimal during this time.
• Wet Season (May to October): Extremely hot, humid, and plagued by severe mosquito populations. Wading birds disperse across the flooded landscape, making them much harder to find.
