Ethiopia is an African birding powerhouse, defined by its dramatic high-altitude plateaus and the deep rift valley. It hosts over 800 species, including an incredible 30+ strict or near-endemics, making it a mandatory stop for serious pan-African listers.

• Bale Mountains National Park: The premier high-altitude site. Essential for the Ethiopian Wolf, Rouget's Rail, Blue-winged Goose, and the elusive Abyssinian Owl.
• Awash National Park: A superb Rift Valley savanna offering the Arabian Bustard, Abyssinian Ground-Hornbill, and massive congregations of raptors.
• Yabello Sanctuary: A remote southern region that is the exclusive stronghold of the highly localized Stresemann's Bushcrow and White-tailed Swallow.

Seasonal Guidance

• Dry Season (October to May): The absolute best time to bird Ethiopia. The weather is clear, and the rugged mountain roads to key sites like the Bale Mountains and Jemma Valley are accessible and safe.
• Wet Season (June to September): The major rainy season renders many of the critical high-altitude dirt roads impassable. Birding is severely restricted during this time, and most tour operators completely avoid the region.
