Bolivia Overview

Bolivia is one of the most rugged, spectacular, and least-visited birding frontiers in South America. It boasts over 1,400 species across a dramatic altitudinal gradient, from the high Andes and the bizarre Altiplano salt flats down to the pristine Amazon basin.

Key Habitats & Highlights

• The Altiplano & Salt Lakes: High-altitude desert lakes offering the surreal sight of three distinct flamingo species (James's, Andean, and Chilean) alongside the Giant Coot and Puna Rhea.
• The Yungas (Coroico & The Death Road): Steep, misty cloud forests dropping from the Andes into the Amazon, essential for the spectacular Hooded Mountain-Toucan and numerous endemic Antpittas.
• Madidi National Park: One of the most pristine and biodiverse protected areas in the Amazon basin, offering excellent chances for Tapirs, Macaw clay licks, and the Harpy Eagle.
• The Blue-throated Macaw Reserve (Beni Savanna): The only place on Earth to reliably find the critically endangered endemic Blue-throated Macaw in the wild.

Seasonal Guidance

• Dry Season (May to October): The most practical and safest time for travel. The high-altitude flamingo lakes are accessible, the notorious "Death Road" into the Yungas is stable, and the Amazonian trails in Madidi are relatively dry.
• Wet Season (November to April): Heavy torrential rains make mountain roads highly dangerous (frequent landslides) and turn the Beni savannas into an impassable swamp, severely limiting birding access.
