Alaska Overview

Alaska is the ultimate North American birding frontier. Its vast, untouched wildernesses of tundra, taiga, and rugged coastlines offer the only US access to numerous Palearctic (Asian) species, massive seabird colonies, and breeding Arctic shorebirds.

Key Habitats & Highlights

• Nome & The Seward Peninsula: A legendary outpost offering easy road access to the tundra. Essential for the Bristle-thighed Curlew, Bluethroat, Gyrfalcon, and rare Asian vagrants.
• Pribilof Islands (St. Paul): Remote Bering Sea islands famous for massive seabird cliffs holding Red-legged Kittiwakes, Horned Puffins, and incredible numbers of lost Asian vagrants during migration.
• Utqiaġvik (Barrow): The northernmost point in the US, offering the spectacular sight of all four eider species (Spectacled, Steller's, King, Common) and breeding Snowy Owls.
• Kenai Fjords (Seward): Dramatic coastal fjords excellent for pelagic trips to see Kittlitz's Murrelet, Parakeet Auklets, and Tufted Puffins.

Seasonal Guidance

• Arctic Summer (Peak) (May to August): The brief, intense window for Alaskan birding. The midnight sun triggers a massive explosion of breeding activity across the tundra, and millions of seabirds return to the coastal cliffs.
• Winter Irruptions (November to February): Brutally cold, dark, and dangerous for travel. While largely avoided by birders, it is the only time to observe localized winter irruptions of Emperor Geese and high-arctic species on the Aleutian chain.
